Having spent many years overseas, and most recently in China, Sarah gravitated towards the beautiful and wild North Pennines on her return. Her hand-painted ceramics are often a direct response to living in the area, in a land of big skies and big changes. Inspired by the loose and succinct quality of Chinese painting, she aims to bring the sweeping touch of the brush to the strident stillness of clay.

 

Layering and painting each ceramic form with the glazes allows the build-up of a sense of atmosphere and mood that lies somewhere between figurative detail and abstraction. Sarah has her studio upstairs at the Forge.  She is a fully qualified Art and Design teacher who also offers a range of Art workshops for children and for adults.
